A bright, deep pink lotus blossom rises above the murky waters. 10×10 original oil painting.
I particularly enjoy the lotus flower not only because of its intrinsic beauty, but also because of its intriguing physical properties. Lotus flowers have been revered throughout history as a symbol of purity because they grow from muddy waters and yet rise up clean and beautiful. The science behind this is amazing. The leaves of the lotus plant are actually covered in microscopic protrusions which prevent water from coating it. So water simply forms droplets and rolls right off, taking dust and dirt with it. Scientists are trying to replicate this ability in new materials and fabrics, all inspired by this awesome plant!
For more details on this principle, dubbed the Lotus Effect, see this Wikipedia article.
